Flag varieties and representations of p-adic groups

Abstract: The intimate connection between algebraic geometry and representation theory has led to many deep and fruitful discoveries over the last century. I will illustrate some historical instances of this relationship. I will then survey recent advances in understanding the role of geometry in the representation theory of p-adic groups and the Langlands program.
